All MSD’s sheep pasteurella vaccines are produced using bacteria which express a high number of iron regulated proteins (IRPs), thus mimicking the situation that occurs when the bacteria infect an animal naturally. As part of the immune response to vaccination, antibodies against these IRPs are produced which then attach to any invading bacteria, causing them to be starved of iron and die. This occurs at an early stage before the bacteria are able to produce large amounts of damaging toxins. Since all strains of Mannheimia haemolytica and Pasteurella trehalosi express similar IRPs, the vaccines also provide good cross protection against other strains of these bacteria.

Pasteurella pneumonia is the biggest killer of sheep. Nearly all sheep carry the organisms on their tonsils and when animals are stressed, disease often results. Clostridial diseases can also strike without warning. The organisms responsible for these are widespread in the soil. The diseases are invariably fatal and all sheep are at risk.

The economic impact of losses due to pasteurellosis and clostridial diseases can be devastating. Lamb deaths are only part of the loss. Even surviving lambs are liable to suffer long term losses in condition and weight. While they may look perfectly well, unseen damage to the lungs is common after pneumonia strikes and only becomes apparent when reduced performance leads to later or fewer finished lambs.

Vaccinating ewes with Heptavac-P Plus initially helps protect their lambs via the colostrum. However, this passive immunity wanes, leaving lambs unprotected. To immunise growing and store lambs after this period, two 2ml doses of Ovivac-P Plus, 4 to 6 weeks apart, are required. The course can be started from as early as three weeks of age.
